  • What is the potential appeal of social realist genre for audiences?
  • Because it revolves around the working class and the struggles they have to face. Also the use of unknown actors makes the movie feel realistic

To what extent can Currran and Seaton as well as Hesmondalgh's theory to be applied to I, Daniel Blake?

The media is controlled by a small number of companies primarily driven by the logic of profit and power.

Media concentration generally limits or inhibits variety, creativity and quality.

More socially diverse patterns of ownership help to create the conditions for more varied and adventurous media productions.

Cultural industry companies try to minimise risk and maximise audiences through vertical and horizontal integration, and by formatting their cultural products (e.g. through the use of stars, genres, and serials, as well as reboots, spin-offs, franchises, etc.).

The largest companies or conglomerates now operate across a number of different cultural industries.

The radical potential of the internet has been contained to some extent by its partial incorporation into a large, profit-orientated set of cultural industries.

This is evident due to how the movie was made for example if the movie has a high production budget which I,Daniel Blake does not establish but you can tell they use normal looking houses and went to local locations to film the movie. Curran and Seaton 's other idea that the media generally limits or inhibits variety creativity and quality does not support I Daniel Blake because its a drama based movie which raises issues such as poverty , inequality of the class systems etc which is something different and creative because not only does it inform the audience about the issue of benefits and housing it educates people about the British Laws which not many  movies do.

Hesmondalgh's idea that cultural industry companies try to minimise risk and maximise audiences through vertical and horizontal integration , and by formatting their cultural products ( through the use stars, genres and serials) . This idea does not support I Daniel Blake because I Daniel Blake is an independant film directed by Ken Loach who directed many successful films in the past . Also I Daniel Blake does not use well known actors to portray their characters which may inform us that the director was taking a risk casting not well known actors.

Riptide/ Steve Neale Theory

Task 1 Steve Neale’s theory of Repetition and Difference. Steve Neale states that genres all contain instances of repetition and difference, difference is essential to the to the economy of the genre. Neale states that the film and it’s genre is defined by two things: How much is conforms to its genre’s individual conventions and stereotypes. A film must match the genre’s conventions to be identified as part of that genre. How much a film subverts the genre’s conventions and stereotypes. The film must subvert convention enough to be considered unique and not just a clone of an existing film. Task 2 MUSIC VIDEO ANALYSIS The Lumineers- Ho Hey This music video is primarily performance-based as it features the band playing their instruments together and lip-syncing the lyrics of the song, all in slow motion. Above is an over-the-shoulder shot of the artist playing his guitar, this has been taken at a relatively low angle so the audience can feel the busy party atmosphe...

goodwins theory

Vance Joy   - Riptide The song fits into the genres of indie folk and indie pop, which explains why the music video draws its influences from indie sub-culture, evident in the fashions and locations featured in the video. Indie sub-culture is heavily influenced by iconography which revolves around the natural world and vintage culture, and a lot of music videos that fit into the indie genre focus themselves around natural spaces and areas. The indie fashions which are featured in the music video are also reinforced in motive by the overall look of the video, which has a somewhat vintage feel. This is due to the effects used on the video which make it appear also aged due to warmer colour balance used on the clips. Video also relates to the idea of the male gaze, which was proposed by Laura Mulvey. The male gaze is a concept of second-wave feminism in which the camera (and subsequently, the viewer) are put into the perspective of a heterosexual man, thus allowing fo...
