  • Conventions of Social Realism are location , non professional actors, social class and age of actors .

  • Key Figures- The actors and the loaction

  • What is the potential appeal of social realist genre for audiences?
  • Because it revolves around the working class and the struggles they have to face. Also the use of unknown actors makes the movie feel realistic

To what extent can Currran and Seaton as well as Hesmondalgh's theory to be applied to I, Daniel Blake?

The media is controlled by a small number of companies primarily driven by the logic of profit and power.

Media concentration generally limits or inhibits variety, creativity and quality.

More socially diverse patterns of ownership help to create the conditions for more varied and adventurous media productions.

Cultural industry companies try to minimise risk and maximise audiences through vertical and horizontal integration, and by formatting their cultural products (e.g. through the use of stars, genres, and serials, as well as reboots, spin-offs, franchises, etc.).

The largest companies or conglomerates now operate across a number of different cultural industries.

The radical potential of the internet has been contained to some extent by its partial incorporation into a large, profit-orientated set of cultural industries.

This is evident due to how the movie was made for example if the movie has a high production budget which I,Daniel Blake does not establish but you can tell they use normal looking houses and went to local locations to film the movie. Curran and Seaton 's other idea that the media generally limits or inhibits variety creativity and quality does not support I Daniel Blake because its a drama based movie which raises issues such as poverty , inequality of the class systems etc which is something different and creative because not only does it inform the audience about the issue of benefits and housing it educates people about the British Laws which not many  movies do.

Hesmondalgh's idea that cultural industry companies try to minimise risk and maximise audiences through vertical and horizontal integration , and by formatting their cultural products ( through the use stars, genres and serials) . This idea does not support I Daniel Blake because I Daniel Blake is an independant film directed by Ken Loach who directed many successful films in the past . Also I Daniel Blake does not use well known actors to portray their characters which may inform us that the director was taking a risk casting not well known actors.

Is Riptide Postmodern

Polysemic readings - metaphorical readings, the splitting ice cream could be symbolic of a broken relationship. Therefore the cheery mise en scene presents a creepy and troubling binary opposition Horror film conventions - stereotypically attractive 'horror film victim' breaks free from being tied to a tree. Connotative of kidnapping and a violent threat. Contrapuntal imagery compared to the chirpy pop song Extremely postmodern video - use of distressing horror imagery deliberately positioning the audience in a confusing and distressing situation. Extremely strong link between lyrical content and on screen visuals - an explicit description, perhaps a binary opposition between a conventional and subversive music video On the word 'riptide' a L/S high angle establishing shot of the sea, connoting danger and death A montage of C/Us of everyday items establishes to the audience themes of travel and solidify the overarching theme of escapism Mixture...

Riptide/ Steve Neale Theory

Task 1 Steve Neale’s theory of Repetition and Difference. Steve Neale states that genres all contain instances of repetition and difference, difference is essential to the to the economy of the genre. Neale states that the film and it’s genre is defined by two things: How much is conforms to its genre’s individual conventions and stereotypes. A film must match the genre’s conventions to be identified as part of that genre. How much a film subverts the genre’s conventions and stereotypes. The film must subvert convention enough to be considered unique and not just a clone of an existing film. Task 2 MUSIC VIDEO ANALYSIS The Lumineers- Ho Hey This music video is primarily performance-based as it features the band playing their instruments together and lip-syncing the lyrics of the song, all in slow motion. Above is an over-the-shoulder shot of the artist playing his guitar, this has been taken at a relatively low angle so the audience can feel the busy party atmosphe...
Media Task Representation of woman in magazines —   What or who is being represented?         A female is being represented, she is a well known American female rapper known as Nicki Minaj and is well known in the music industry.      Nicki is a representation for women and how women are perceived by society, this is shown when Nicki Minaj's costume is a revealing dress that is unzipped and is showing cleavage. This magazine speaks about unzipping, this semantic field is used to create a coincidence of related words to intrigue readers especially men. —   How are they represented -, as strong, sexualised etc? Using what codes – body language, camera angle, costume etc?         T he body language used  is to show Nicki Minajs confidence and independence as she is standing straight up with her arms by her side. This may link to the ...
