Industry – Apply theoretical approaches

Historical Task: Find examples from your historical magazine (Woman’s Realm) that support (or challenge) the view that variety, creativity and quality are limited.

  • " Treasury of Homemaking"- This implies that the magazine is based on housewives ensuring they live up too their roles and create a happy and clean environment at home. A housewives duty was to clean, cook and take care of the children. Homemaking for woman ensured that they were part of the domestic sphere.
  • " The language of Flowers"- This indicated that woman were seen to be highly interested in romance and strived to have a love filled relationship with their husbands. The pill was introduced in the 1950s which trigged more sexual relationships and more affection from their husbands. There is a lack of creativity due to the fact that they thought if a women's husband showed affection or bought flowers their wives would be content and happy.

  • Even though it is a magazine based for woman there is a children's realm in the contents page of the magazine. This was due to the fact that woman were portrayed to clean, cook and take care of their children to keep their husbands happy. Woman were to seen to be maternal and be able to multi task with their children.
  • On the contents page there is an advert about how a womans hands can be slightly damage due to the fact that she does housework and needs to ensure they still remain soft for her husband. This article identifies the fact that woman did most of the housework as her husband worked and provided financially, it was due to the domestic sphere that they did the housework and created a happy home for their children and husbands. It states that the marriage would only be perfect if the house was perfect. Their are gender roles shown here as woman did housework which is feminine and the husband do house maintenance which is more masculine.
  • Bottled Beauty- This article states that woman strived to look beautiful and flawless for their husbands. Even though woman had roles to cook, clean and take care of infants they still remained to look perfect due to applying make up and keeping their appearances up to date.

  • Contemporary Task: Find examples from your contemporary non-mainstream magazine that support (or challenge) the view that its ownership allows for more varied and adventurous content.

    the power of the hoodie

Feared, derided, misunderstood and still resolutely un-hugged, the utilitarian, hugely popular sportswear garment, the hoodie, has staged a comeback against a backdrop of pyromania and rioting. Worn by millions every day, a generation's default wardrobe choice was transformed into an instant criminal cloak for London's looting youth. It may be more newsworthy now, but the hoodie and the folk devil it represents have been with us for a long time. As for the hoodie, its mass adoption as an everyday item began with the parallel popularity of hip-hop imported from the US in the 1980s, where rappers modelled themselves as athletes in a bid to emulate the power and success of world-beating sports stars. The corporate balance sheet of Adidas would doubtless be a lot poorer without the patronage of rappers Run-DMC, or reggae star Bob Marley. Hip-hop later turned to gang culture for its stylistic cues, and it is probably impossible to say whether gangsters modelled themselves on hip...
Media Task Representation of woman in magazines —   What or who is being represented?         A female is being represented, she is a well known American female rapper known as Nicki Minaj and is well known in the music industry.      Nicki is a representation for women and how women are perceived by society, this is shown when Nicki Minaj's costume is a revealing dress that is unzipped and is showing cleavage.
