Band Aid- Do they Know its Christmas (1984) " Do They Know It's Christmas? " is a song written in 1984 by  Bob Geldof  and  Midge Ure  in reaction to television reports of the  1983–85 famine in Ethiopia . Woman's Monthly magazines are seen to be more aspirational than weekly woman magazines.I n consumer marketing, an  aspirational  brand or product means a large segment of its exposure audience wishes to own it, but for economic reasons cannot. An  aspirational  product implies certain positive characteristics to the user, but the supply appears limited due to limited production quantities. Challenge Task Compare and contrast the Tide advert with one of the following adverts. Discuss the different functions of advertising in 1940s compared to 1950s. Relate it to your understanding of the social and economic context at the time. [The points from Miss Represented will help] in the 1940s  woman were portrayed in the media as objects that were desired to clean the house and take care of the children. Men were either working and providing for the family financially or at war. The tide advertisement was used to pursue woman and ensure they bought the correct cleaning product that would have the best results. Woman were seen only to have skills in the household and were not seen to be capable of working in a male domineince society. The tide advert resembles the woman desire to clean and take care of her family.  1940s media was used as propaganda. Both adverts encourage woman to work in the public sphere. What editing technique is used during this moment? What connotations does it create? What is the significance of the sports selected? How could you link it to Hall’s theory? The editing technique used is Cross Cutting, this is when an editor cuts between two separate scenes happening in two separate locations at the same time. This serves to illustrate a contrast or a link between them. The connotations in these two stills are showing physical and strong behaviour which are not normally associated with woman. Woman are seen to be gentle and do not normally take  part in physical activities and  these sports are normally associated with male dominance . The sports seen in these two stills are rugby and karate, they are dangerous to some extent and woman are rarely seen partaking in these sports. Katniss does it anyway, indicating a rebellious streak in her. Besides, what she catches or collects that her family doesn’t need to eat, she sells in the district’s black market, again implying a disregard for rules
Media Task Representation of woman in magazines —   What or who is being represented?         A female is being represented, she is a well known American female rapper known as Nicki Minaj and is well known in the music industry.      Nicki is a representation for women and how women are perceived by society, this is shown when Nicki Minaj's costume is a revealing dress that is unzipped and is showing cleavage. This magazine speaks about unzipping, this semantic field is used to create a coincidence of related words to intrigue readers especially men. —   How are they represented -, as strong, sexualised etc? Using what codes – body language, camera angle, costume etc?         T he body language used  is to show Nicki Minajs confidence and independence as she is standing straight up with her arms by her side.
